How to email investors: cold outreach for founders
Short answer
Founders get replies from investors when they write only to funds whose stated thesis matches their stage, sector, geography and cheque size, address the partner who takes first meetings, keep the email to a few lines with one concrete proof point, ask for a call rather than a commitment, and never overstate traction.
Fit matters more than volume
Thousands of funds exist, and most of them do not invest at your stage, in your sector or in your region. Writing to a growth fund as a pre-seed company wastes both sides' time. The work is reading each fund's own site for its thesis, cheque size, geography and portfolio, and only writing where it genuinely fits.
Most seed rounds are run against 150 to 300 investors who pass that test.
Write to the right partner
Within a fund, find the partner who covers your sector and takes first meetings. A generic info@ address or the most famous name at the firm is rarely the right one.
What the email should say
A good first email to an investor is short:
- +One line on what you do, in plain words.
- +Why this fund: something specific from their thesis or portfolio.
- +One concrete proof point: traction, a notable customer, or why the team is the right one.
- +A simple ask for a short call.
What never to write
Do not invent or round up traction, and do not discuss valuation, term sheets or who else is in the round in a cold email. Those are statements about a live financing; a fabricated number or a hint that the round is closing is not recoverable once an investor checks.
Send from your own address
Investors look the sender up. Email from your real company domain is expected; a lookalike domain reads as suspicious. A raise is a few hundred emails over several weeks, ordinary volume for a real domain.
How Pipestork helps
Pipestork's fundraising mode reads your company the way an investor would, researches real funds and scores each one on stage, sector, geography and cheque size, then writes to the partner who takes first meetings, from your own mailbox. Every number in a draft is checked against the facts you supplied, and the agent never states a valuation or claims others have committed.
Have the agents do this for you
Pipestork researches your market from your website, finds verified decision-makers, writes a sequence per prospect and sends it with conservative limits, so you can apply everything on this page without doing it by hand.
